Environmental Food

When we speak of G.R.E.E.N. food the first thing that comes to mind is food that is good for the natural environment. What kind of food is good or better for the environment than others? There are many ways in which food can be good for or harmful to the environment. Of course the use of pesticides, herbicides, hormones and antibiotics amongst other things has a strong impact on the immediate and global environment. The debate over genetically-modified or GMO foods is another one that has serious implications for the sustainability of agriculture or biodiversity. Other issues to consider are the methods of raising animals for food, for example the over-fishing of our oceans or the cutting of rainforest to raise cattle. Finally, more recently a debate has emerged over the relative importance of choosing locally grown and produced food versus organically-labelled foods. If food is grown, harvested, packaged and transported thousands of miles to our tables, is this an environmentally-sound choice, even if it is organic?

In this section we will present ideas and research and explore the impacts of all these elements to increase our awareness of the importance of the choices we make. Although it has not received much mainstream coverage, our food choices do impact the environment in wide-ranging ways. Believe it or not, we can choose to eat to reduce greenhouse gases and deforestation, to sustain agricultural land for the future, to protect our clean water and our clean air and to minimize the risks brought by drought and other climactic changes. Read on to learn more about these issues and to contribute to our lively forum.
